Evolution of colonial animals
Hi! I’m Sarah Leventhal, a paleobiologist researching division of labor in colonial animals. Division of labor, most broadly, refers to specialization of function among members of a group. You can find examples of division of labor at all levels of biological organization, from the differentiation of organelles in eukaryotic cells to task specialization among members of a society. Most of my research focuses on a group of animals called bryozoans, also known as “moss animals,” which have a prolific fossil record with over 15,000 named species. They have a stunning range of division of labor in their colonies, with clonal individuals (called zooids) expressing different morphologies and performing different functions. The different types of zooids within a colony are called polymorphs, and the calcified skeletons all zooids build reflect their differences, even in their fossilized remains.
This photo below is of a ~90 Million year old cheilostome bryozoan colony belonging to the genus Wilbertopora.
The three polymorphs here (labeled Av, Az, and Ov) perform different tasks. Az is a feeding zooid, responsible for acquiring food for the colony through suspension feeding. Av is a defensive zooid, equipped in life with a hinged appendage that can smack predatory epibionts crawling along the colony surface. Ov is a brooding structure, a composite zooid that houses the colony’s embryos until they are ready to undergo metamorphosis and form a new colony. Fortunately, modern species express similar polymorph types to the ones expressed in this fossil, allowing for some level of functional inference from the fossil record.
I am currently an Abbott Postdoctoral Fellow at the National Museum of Natural History, where I research the effects of the end-Cretaceous extinction event (~66 million years ago) on the division of labor of bryozoans. In my current position, I also work to promote science communication through a variety of visitor-oriented programming for both adults and children. Division of labor through mass extinction: harmful, helpful, neutral?
The last major mass extinction event abruptly ended the world of non-avian dinosaurs, ammonoids, and rudist bivalve reefs. More than two-thirds of the world’s genera disappeared at the global boundary marking the start of the Cenozoic. Bryozoans lost around a third of genera during this event (around 27% of species, assuming all of the species in each surviving genus actually crossed the boundary), which is definitely better than the average extinction intensity experienced across animals, but is still significantly elevated compared to background extinction rates (~0.2 extinctions for every 10,000 species every 100 years, or about 2% of species every million years). So, no matter how frame the results, bryozoans were hit hard by the end-Cretaceous extinction event. I am currently testing whether certain colony traits are associated with different extinction outcomes through this interval.
Was division of labor, reflected in preserved polymorphs, associated with genus extinction across the end-Cretaceous event? Division of labor increases colony longevity, generating long-lasting, large colonies that can outcompete their neighbors for space. However, most polymorphs are non-feeding and are heavily calcified, requiring sustenance from their feeding counterparts. Ocean acidification and primary productivity declines may have strained colonies with polymorphs that derived their fitness from spatial competition and predator deterrence, which would almost certainly be reduced during the die-off of the end-Cretaceous extinction event. These polymorphs may have been too developmentally entrenched to remove from colonies, creating a serious problem for colonies’ energy budgets in the face of limited resources.

The evolutionary morphology of division of labor
Ant colonies, siphonophores, and swirling spheres of Volvox all exhibit striking morphological differentiation among colony members. But how did such differences emerge in deep time? Ancestrally, there may have been morphological variation expressed in monomorphic colonies that later became partitioned into polymorphs. Or morphological variation may have expanded, opening up formerly unavailable ranges of morphologies to be expressed by colony members.
In bryozoans, the evolutionary emergence and proliferation of division of labor is recorded in their fossil record. Beginning around 100 million years ago, the first polymorphic bryozoan belonging to the cheilostome clade (the most diverse group of bryozoans) evolved on the outskirts of the Western Interior Seaway (modern day Texas and Oklahoma). This cheilostome bryozoan is called Wilbertopora and it experienced a diversification event, forming 28 species through the end of the Cretaceous. I used three-dimensional reconstructions of colonies and SEM photographs to digitize polymorph morphologies in fossil colonies to understand how their polymorphic morphologies have changed over time. For Wilbertopora, polymorphic morphologies appear to emerge as an expansion of the range of variation present in colonies. In other words, novel polymorphs expressed previously unrecognized morphologies, generating new morphologies that were operating under different selective pressures than their ancestral feeding counterparts.
